Beginners Guide To Punting
November 16, 2006
Interested in doing a little punting and seeking a little introduction? Look no further.
There are many ways to wager on your favourite team in the Premiership or any other sporting event, but online is probably the most convenient and there a variety of sportsbooks to choose from.
Choose a bookmaker—it might be prudent to open an account with a number of books, in order to truly get the best value or deal on your bets—open up an account and deposit some money, most books have a minimum deposit.
There are also a number of payment options available to punters, including all major credit cards and e-wallets such as FireOne and NETeller.
Once the money is in your account you can begin to wager. Bookmakers usually have a minimum value that you can wager with.
Here are the basics before you start to wager.
Bet types
First off there are three basic types of wagers that you can choose from:
Win: As the title implies you are betting on something to win, whether it be Man U in the Premier or the All Blacks in rugby.
Each Way: The Each Way bet consists of two parts, a win and a place.
The win is covered above and a place bet is where you wager on something almost winning at lesser odds, a backup bet of sorts.
Lay: A bet that is the opposite of a win, where the bettor wagers on something to lose.
Odds
Betting odds are displayed in various ways depending in what region you reside. In the UK odds are listed fractionally i.e. 9/1, 1/9 etc.
If you wager £10 at 9/1 odds and win, the total payout would be £90. If you wager £10 at 1/9 odds, your total payout would be about £11.11.
Enjoy betting and bet within your means.
