Poker Stars aiming for Guiness Record

If PokerStars has its way, it too will soon have an entry in the famed record book. In a year where poker was Lycos’ 2008 No. 1 search term, it seems as if PokerStars wants poker to add another notch into its belt. In an online poker tournament to be held on December 28, 2008 at 3:30 pm EST, PokerStars will attempt to establish a world record for the world’s largest poker tournament. PokerStars unofficially set a record for the largest poker tournament last summer with 20,000 players and this time around the online poker room has its sights set on 35,000 for the online event with 3,500 tables to start the tourney. During the summer event, a player known as Lynna1 won $20,000 and top prize at the December Guinness record event will amount to $50,000 even though buy-in will be $10+$1. If you blink you might miss something, as speed will be the operative word at this tournament with blinds going up every 10 minutes. As of a week ago (December 12), reports indicated that 516 entrants had signed up but with a chance to establish a world record and win $50,000, that number surely has changed. If the tournament does top out at 35,000, there won’t be any instant gratification as the record must be verified by the Guinness offices in London; that process is said to take six weeks.
