When First Is A Lot More

For those who have not been following all of the Durr related news out of the World Series of Poker (WSOP), here is a quick summary of all that is being posted on the forums. Before the WSOP began, internet poker superstar Tom ‘Durr’ Dwan made a few side bets with other high stakes online poker regulars that we would be able to claim a bracelet. If we happen to win a bracelet, he would stand to make over $12.9 million dollars, a lot more than even first prize of the main event.
Now to any mere human, the odds of winning a bracelet is over 1,000 to 1. There are large fields to contend with and with natural variance set to come into play every time there is a suck out or one time three outer, that could mean the tournament is over. That’s generally why you don’t exactly see people winning repeat main event championships or that many bracelets.
But then there is Tom Dwan, arguably the world’s best online cash game player, and is not afraid to have any kind of gamble. His pots online regularly reach over six figures so it’s not like he’s afraid to drop a few five figure bets at any time. So during one of the no limit events, he made it to heads up against a lesser known tournament player, with an army of poker pros watching in to see whether Tom Dwan could get to a coveted bracelet and win over $12 million in side bets, even though the first prize was a measly $600,000.
Him winning the bracelet would send a lot of poker players bankrupt and as fate would have it, he finished second and many poker players jumped for joy to see that their bets were still alive whilst Tom Dwan just continued grinding on the next event to take another shot at winning $12 million dollars.
